Opening of the exhibition “Teachers in Zagreb’s Street Names”
Official opening of the exhibition “Teachers in Zagreb’s Street Names” will take place on Zrinjevac. The exhibition presents the teachers after whom Zagreb’s streets are named and underscores the important role of the teaching profession in the modernization of both society and the city of Zagreb.
The administrative area of the City of Zagreb today has around 5,500 streets and other named public areas, while the city of Zagreb itself has approximately 4,000, of which about 1,100 streets and squares are named after prominent people. Ivan Filipović Street in Lašćina was the first Zagreb street named after a teacher, and has had that name since 1909.
Today, there are around twenty streets in Zagreb named after prominent teachers, including two real and two fictional female teachers. At the exhibition, we will introduce the teacher and the first Zagreb and Croatian curator, and propose that one street be named after her. This would be the 77th Zagreb street named after a woman, compared to more than 1,000 streets named after male meritorious individuals.
